GHS Labeling Compliance

As the UN Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals (GHS) affects international product labeling laws, manufacturers of chemical products will be required to comply with these label changes.

​

GHS has been adopted in Europe and is in the process of adoption in the United States, Canada and other industrialized nations. The goal is to create a single way to describe and classify chemical hazards on product labels and chemical Safety Data Sheets used everywhere in the world. Standardizing chemical classifications, hazard statements, signal words and graphic symbols and colors will help manufacturers, workers and consumers understand the potential health hazards posed by chemicals – no matter where they were produced.

 

GHS labeling requirements

 

GHS labels must include:

​

• A product identifier 

• ​A signal word - either Category 1, “Warning,” or Category 2, “Danger” 

• Standardized hazard statements corresponding to health, physical and environmental hazard class, hazard symbols/pictograms, precautionary statements 

• The name, address and telephone number of the chemical manufacturer, importer or other responsible party
